In his email of 25 March 2011, Roy Gereau said: "I’m writing in haste just before driving north to a family funeral, but I think I can help you here. From its occurrence along the coast (thus presumably at a low elevation) in Guerrero and the branched rays of the umbel, I can guess with some confidence that this is probably Bomarea edulis (Tussac) Herb., although fruiting specimens of this genus are difficult to identify at best. Still, by geographic locality and process of elimination, I think that this is probably a reliable identification. If you ever come across material of this species in flower, I should be able to remove all doubt." Nelly Diego det'd as Bomarea aff. hirtella (email of 5 April 2011), apparently a synonym. When asked about the synonymy, R. Gereau responded: "I listed Bomarea hirtella (Kunth) Herb. as a taxonomic synonym of B. edulis (Tussac) Herb. in Flora Mesomericana (1994), as do almost all other recent floristic authors for Central America (see http://www.tropicos.org/Name/1200224?tab=acceptednames). The two names certainly represent a single species, and the basionym of B. edulis is older (published in 1808) than that of B. hirtella (1816), so B. edulis has priority. I find no reference to a B. edulis subsp. hirtella, where did you see this? There is a B. edulis var. hirtula Suess. & R. Goepp., published in 1942, but this varietal epithet is spelled differently and the names are completely independent. In short, there’s no taxonomic distinction between Bomarea edulis and B. hirtella." Roy Gereau (from photo of fruit; email of 25 March 2011)
